6 kW Solar Installation: Panel Count, Roof and Price

The price of a 6 kW solar installation is made of several items: the panels, the inverter, the mounting structure, the cabling, the labour and the grid connection. Only one of them can be worked out to the unit before anyone has looked at the roof: the panels. We sell LONGi solar panels, so that is the item this article prices — how many modules make 6 kW, how much area and weight they put on a roof, and what they cost at the price shown on their pages.

How many panels is 6 kW?

One line of arithmetic: target power ÷ panel power, rounded up. For 6 kW with the Hi-MO X10 Guardian LR7-60HVHL 550W, 6,000 ÷ 550 = 10.9, so eleven panels and 6.05 kWp installed. With a 510 W module it takes twelve; with a 650 W module, ten.

We ran the sum for three sizes people ask for — 3, 6 and 9 kW — and three panels of different formats, from their records.

The area is that of the modules themselves: length × width × count. The weight is the panels alone, without rails or clamps. The price is the catalogue price in UAE dirhams multiplied by the count; the price on the product page is the price you pay.

Three panels, three ways to reach 6 kW

• The EcoLife LR7-54HJD 510W is the shortest of the three: 1,800 × 1,134 mm, 23.5 kg and a module efficiency of 25.0%. Twelve make 6.12 kWp on 24.5 m². It is the format for a roof where the rafter length is tight. The EcoLife 495–510 W datasheet has the full table.
• The 550 W Hi-MO X10 Guardian LR7-60HVHL measures 1,990 × 1,134 mm and its record states 16.3 kg ±1%: eleven panels weigh only 179 kg, against 282 kg for the twelve EcoLife. It is the module our calculator picks; its 535–560 W datasheet states a single 1.6 mm glass.
• The Hi-MO X10 Scientist LR7-72HVH 650W measures 2,382 × 1,134 mm and weighs 28.5 kg. Ten are enough for 6.5 kWp: fewer rails, fewer clamps and fewer connections, but a longer module to handle and 27 m² of area.

What those 6 kW produce

Our calculator applies a 0.8 performance ratio to a grid-tied system and a number of peak sun hours per country. With the UAE figure, 5.7 hours, the eleven panels yield 6.05 × 5.7 × 0.8 = 27.6 kWh a day. With the figure held for France, 3.7 hours, the same array yields 17.9 kWh a day, about 6,500 kWh a year.

Read the other way round, the sum says which home 6 kW is enough for. Our grid-tied system for a house — two air conditioners, a fridge, lights, a TV, a washing machine and a kitchen appliance — uses 25.4 kWh a day, and in the UAE it needs exactly these eleven panels. In France the same consumption would call for 25.4 ÷ (3.7 × 0.8) = 8.58 kWp, which is sixteen 550 W panels.

And the other items of the price?

The system pages state what has to be bought beside the panels, without selling it. For the house, the inverter line asks for 9 kW, because an inverter is sized on the home's peak load and not on the array. With storage, the house system with evening backup adds a storage rating counted as one 5.12 kWh module, and the full-night version counts two.

Those lines are sizes, not products: our catalogue stops at the panels. Mounting, cabling, labour and connection depend on the roof and on the installer who signs off the installation in your country; the panel price is the part known in advance.

3 kW and 9 kW

The table reads the same way for the other two sizes. A 3 kW installation is six 550 W panels (3.3 kWp) for AED 2,046 — the array of our apartment system.
